In this month’s pattern we introduce 3 small tangent circles outside of the main large circles, which appear in several different designs in the book. The rest of the motif is mainly composed of differently sized circles, creating pleasing symmetry.

For the more ambitious drawers, I’ve also included some optional details, such as some quatrefoil variations.

In this month’s pattern we keep things simple and take the time to perfect the 3 tangent circles, which are the foundation of all designs in the book. The rest of the motif is mainly composed of symmetrical “mandorlas”, giving multiple options for decorating in any style.

For the more ambitious drawers, I’ve also included some optional details, which can either be followed exactly or hopefully spark ideas of your own.

Method comparison: Regular octagon

In this video, I compare two different methods of constructing an equivalent regular octagon inside a circle, and inside a square.

Unlike most other videos, I didn't stumble on this construction whilst exploring myself. I have my super talented geometry friend @escuela.conectarte to thank for referring me to F. Roesling's 'Guide to the construction of Gothic details' book, where this proportion was stated.

So I had to make a construction video, and needless to say, it became my high school students' homework to prove it 😄

An outstanding pattern taught by @samira.mian #SMPMay26 this month!

I don’t often colour my patterns digitally, but this outline was too good to waste. After painting it, it became too dark to see the lines and couldn’t see the led even after retracing. But I love this star cutout resulting from the rhombus tile and wanted to keep as many of the little rhombus inside the pattern as possible.

✨ Updated tutorial for this stunning curvilinear tessellation from Bourgoin’s ‘Les Éléments de l’Art Arabe’. ✨

A big thank you to mrhobbie who whilst learning this pattern from my tutorial, inspired a full construction for the entire tessellation, without the need to transfer it with tracing paper. My tutorial for this pattern now includes 3 versions for all abilities!

We start off Celebrating The Power of Form by drawing the very first design out of one hundred in the book.

It is one of the most iconic and recognisable designs with its sixfold tangent flower shapes and inscribed hearts on the outside.

It is the perfect intermediate pattern to learn - not too easy but not overly challenging, it is just following each step and enjoying the process.

The traditional Gothic design will be a lovely opportunity to apply an established artistic style, or the chance to venture into a completely new and contrasting aesthetic.

🌟 The Power of Form Tutorials 🌟

I’m thrilled to share my long-term passion project with the world.

Over the past months, I’ve been analysing the geometric patterns from The Power of Form by British architect Robert Billings. To mark 175 years since its publication, I’m launching a monthly series called Celebrating The Power of Form.

On the 1st day of each month, I will publish one drawing tutorial recreating the original Gothic motif. This will include step-by-step compass-and-ruler visual instructions, as well as a draw along demonstration video of the construction.

I have classified these historical patterns into easy, intermediate and advanced, but all designs are accessible to everyone since they follow a methodical and meditative process of layering lines and circles to produce your own artwork. These drawings can then be used as a foundation for exploring a wide range of painting or colouring styles.

The subscription is £3 per month and is hosted on https://ko-fi.com/mathsimum

The first pattern will be released on May 1st and will be free for everyone, so you can decide whether you’d like to subscribe and continue learning with me.

Alongside the monthly patterns, I’ll also be sharing free videos exploring geometric methods and variation comparisons to enrich the broader learning experience.

As usual I will continue to add my other geometric analysis to my existing Ko-fi shop as well.

These Damascus stone carved window frames have been some of my most favourite to analyse and draw!
All based on either a hexagon or a square tile which seamlessly tessellate and interlace (I always do the weaving before tiling! 😃)
