Create your own square pattern tessellations with this detailed compass-and-ruler construction tutorial.

The instructions consist of making 10 different geometric tessellating patterns all based on a single square tile. I’ve broken down the square construction into clear steps so you can draw it perfectly by hand, and then I’ve shown how to trace selected line segments on tracing paper to create 10 different designs from that. Then you can transfer and replicate each tile into a full tessellation. After creating these patterns you will no doubt be able to continue picking your own lines and invent further patterns of your own.

To spark your creativity, I’ve included my own hand-painted modern colour versions of each tiling including some interesting pattern cutouts.

Once you’ve drawn the tessellations, decorate them in any style that inspires you.
